Amplification: Tit for Tat

Amplification: Tit for Tat

The proverb "Tit for tat" means returning an action with a similar action, especially paying back an injury or insult in the same way. In simple words, it means "an eye for an eye" or treating a person exactly how they treat you.

This principle is common in everyday life. When someone does something harmful to us, our natural human reaction is often to seek revenge and hurt them back. In the famous story of the fox and the crane, the fox served soup in a flat dish which the crane could not drink. Later, the crane invited the fox and served food in a narrow-necked jar, teaching the selfish fox a lesson by giving "tit for tat."

However, this policy is not always good for society. While it may teach a selfish person a lesson, revenge usually leads to endless hatred, fights, and bitterness. If everyone follows "tit for tat," peace cannot exist in the world. As Mahatma Gandhi famously said, "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind."

Therefore, although "tit for tat" is natural human behavior, forgiveness, tolerance, and kindness are far greater virtues. Responding to anger with love and patience often turns an enemy into a friend and brings lasting peace.

Assamese Translation (অসমীয়া ভাঙনি)

(Tit for tat)
